Its location, surrounded by the highlands of Kirinyaga and bordering the Mount Kenya forest, combines fertile volcanic soils with an environment particularly well suited to growing both coffee and tea.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"626\" data-end=\"880\"\u003eThe station works with around \u003cstrong data-start=\"656\" data-end=\"683\"\u003e600 smallholder farmers\u003c\/strong\u003e, each cultivating an average of just 0.1 hectares. Women also represent a particularly significant part of the cooperative’s membership, while most farming families belong to the Kikuyu community.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"882\" data-end=\"1061\"\u003eCoffee grows between \u003cstrong data-start=\"903\" data-end=\"929\"\u003e1,650 and 1,700 metres\u003c\/strong\u003e, primarily from \u003cstrong data-start=\"946\" data-end=\"971\"\u003eSL28, SL34 and Batian\u003c\/strong\u003e, under the shade of macadamia trees. This lot has been processed using the washed method.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 data-section-id=\"tsqgzi\" data-start=\"1063\" data-end=\"1077\"\u003eIn the cup\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1079\" data-end=\"1142\"\u003eKiamutuira shows a noticeably different expression from Mutitu.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1144\" data-end=\"1387\"\u003eVanilla brings a soft, rounded sweetness from the beginning, while lemon introduces clean and defined acidity. Cacao sits underneath, adding structure and depth, while black tea brings everything together with an elegant and persistent finish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1389\" data-end=\"1487\"\u003eSweet, citrusy and clean.. with that tea-like character becoming more defined as the coffee cools.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 data-section-id=\"b18d5y\" data-start=\"1489\" data-end=\"1511\"\u003eWhy we selected it\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1513\" data-end=\"1574\"\u003eThis year, we wanted to explore Kenya in a little more depth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1576\" data-end=\"1808\"\u003eRather than selecting a single coffee to represent the country, we chose \u003cstrong data-start=\"1649\" data-end=\"1679\"\u003efive different expressions\u003c\/strong\u003e that would allow us to better understand how variety, washing station and place can change the cup, even within the same region.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1810\" data-end=\"1977\"\u003eMutitu was the first.
