This coffee comes from Giku Hill, a coffee-growing hill located in the province of Butanyerera, Burundi, and is processed at Ninga Washing Station, a relatively recent addition to the Long Miles Coffee project. In this remote region of the country, coffee is far more than a crop. It is an essential part of everyday life for hundreds of families who depend on it for their livelihoods. During the 2025 harvest, 742 smallholder farmers delivered their cherries to this washing station.

Ninga was built in 2019, about 10km from the Bukeye Washing Station, after it became clear that many farmers in the area were traveling long distances to reach washing stations with fair scales and transparent payment systems. Located at around 1900masl and surrounded by the Nkokoma River, the station allows local farmers to process their coffee closer to home, strengthening the local economy while improving traceability.

The region itself is extremely remote. Reaching Giku Hill requires traveling more than 15km of dirt roads, crossing rivers, and passing through provincial borders. Although small rivers run through the landscape, access to clean drinking water and electricity remains limited for many communities. Even so, the hills are covered with coffee trees growing along narrow paths, farmland, and the mud-brick homes of local farmers.

Over the years, periods of conflict in the country sometimes forced farmers to temporarily abandon their land. When they returned, their coffee trees were still there, waiting. Slowly, they rebuilt their farms and communities. Despite this complex history, the hills around Ninga have consistently produced elegant and complex coffees, known for their clarity and structured cup profile.

Coffee trees in this area are mainly Bourbon, typically grown around 1700masl, and processed at the washing station using several methods. For this lot, the washed process is used to highlight the purity and character of the origin.

A coffee that reflects both the resilience of Burundi’s coffee-growing communities and the remarkable potential of these hills.
