This microlot is from Merly León, a female producer. Her 2.5ha farm, El Churaz, is located in Queromarcaat at 2250m above sea level, making it ideal for specialty coffee production due to its abundant sunshine and cool temperatures. Together with her sister Ismeria, who also operates a farm in the region, Merly is motivated and inquisitive, constantly seeking to improve quality and productivity on the farm. This washed lot includes an extended 48h anaerobic fermentation prior to washing.
Queromarca has several microclimates ideal for the production of Specialty Coffees and is one of the areas where coffee was first produced in the entire Callayuc district. It is one of the districts of the Cutervo province, Cajamarca, in northern Peru. It is a territory that presents a typical tropical forest with abundant biodiversity and fertile valleys in its center. Its altitude varies from 690 meters above sea level to 2,800 meters above sea level at its highest point. Its geographical conditions allow the existence of a vast flora and fauna, and local producers cover agricultural lands with permanent crops and natural forests, especially coffee.
Just a few minutes from Callayuc, there is the Viluco Waterfall, also known as the “bridal veil”. This is a beautiful waterfall located in a warm climate that is easily accessible to tourists. On the way to the waterfall, you can enjoy stunning views. There is also Cerro Pabellón and it is mostly surrounded by forest. This peak is also part of a local mountain range, with endemic characteristics and is considered a wildlife refuge. Very close to this peak is the Wissus Mountain Range, also known as Huichus. This mountain range is home to water source reserves and refuge for important wildlife, varied intertropical flora and fauna.
In 1897, the Belgian consul in Lima wrote a report stating that “Peruvian coffee is delicious,” and there was every reason to believe he was right. By that same year, coffee exports had reached over 20,000 bags, almost three times as many as in 1894. By the eve of World War I, Peru would be among the top 10 coffee producing countries in the world, even rising to number 5 several times.
